Barbara Mae McCabe, 85, of Billings, passed away on May 17,2012, at Riverstone Health Hospice. Barbara was born on May 10, 1927, in Belle Prairie, Mont., to Freedom Liberty Jones and Harriet Arva Shanks.

She obtained a teaching certificate in Billings and taught grades 1 through 8 for two years before marrying Stanley Strietmatter in Glendive. Mom held a few jobs, but her main job was mother and homemaker.

Barbara met the love of her life, Roy McCabe, and they were married Aug. 21, 1964. Barbara and Roy happily toured the country after Roy’s retirement before settling back in Billings in 1986. Mom’s greatest joy in life was her kids and grandkids. Mom crocheted many an afghan for relatives and friends alike!

Mom was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Her faith remained steadfast throughout her life. She had accepted the Lord as her Savior, which helped her through her health struggles. Her husband, Roy McCabe; Roy’s son, David; and her siblings Kenny, Dorothy, Harriet and Shirley preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Stan (Sharon) Strietmatter of Los Lunas, N.M.; her “onliest daughter in the whole wide world”, Janeale (Mitch) Durand, of Roberts, Mont.; her son, Wade (Rochelle) Strietmatter, of Billings; her daughter, Pat (Bernie) McCabe Staggs, of Florence, Mont.; her grandchildren, Shana, Liza, Keane, Kelsey, Kim, Kelly, Brian, Wendy, Donald, Jennifer, Alexsis; numerous great-grandchildren and her “great-grand dogs.”

Cremation has taken place with memorial services on Wednesday, May 23, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with internment following at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Riverstone Health Hospice, or charity of one’s choice.
