Ruby Lois Kreinbrook Hayes

Ruby Lois Kreinbrook Hayes

Ruby Lois Kreinbrook Hayes was born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Mount Pleasant, Pa. She died on April 14, 2014, from complications of an auto-immune disorder.

She was raised on the family farm in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, the youngest of eight children of Leroy and Carolyn Kreinbrook. Childhood polio slowed her body, but not her spirit. She graduated from Grove City College, and had a master’s degree from Columbia University by age 24. She worked in nine states, drove across country many times (sometimes by herself, wheelchair in tow), and was always ready for an adventure. She raised two children under extraordinary circumstances, and helped raise three grandchildren. She spent most of her life teaching — from elementary, high school and college students to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Don; her daughter, Lisa and son-in-law Ted; grandchildren Danni, Andrea and Annah; great-grandchildren Brecken and Kinley; the families of numerous nieces and nephews; and a too-well-fed canine companion Max — “Mom, a Bichon Frise is supposed to be a small dog, isn’t it?”

Her family extends a special thank you to the friends, neighbors and caregivers who helped and sustained her through the years. Thank you also to all of the very kind and talented people who cared for her at the Billings Clinic and the Billings Health and Rehabilitation Community in her final weeks — first rate.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 119 N. 33rd St., Billings, at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Luke’s would be much appreciated. Our mother was married there, raised her kids there, and it and the people she encountered there were an important part of her life.
