On Wednesday, May 6, 2014, Paul L. Metzger passed away peacefully at Fischer Cottage at St. John’s Lutheran Ministries. Born June 27, 1916, Paul grew up on and eventually purchased and expanded the family farm homesteaded by his parents. Located off Duck Creek, Metzger Road stands as memory of the pioneering spirit of the early settlers. The Metzger family never did experience electricity at the original home, and it wasn’t until the early ‘50s, when Paul bought an adjoining farm and moved to it that he enjoyed such luxury. Like his father before him, Paul was not afraid to experiment with different crops, but wheat farming was his mainstay. Paul also learned the value of investing from his father, or “playing in the stock market,” and enjoyed great success. With only an 8th grade education, Paul was an amazedly astute investor and it was his both his passion and his hobby. Being an avid blackjack player, his other passion was his annual trip to Jackpot NV, for a week of poker.
Having lived his entire life the Billings, area, Paul was a walking historian, and if happened between 1920 and 2013, he was able to recall amazing details of the area history. From the flood of 1937 that ravaged downtown Billings to the fire of the original Northern Hotel as well as more mundane events, Paul was able to provide detail and dates. While celebrating his 95th birthday, he was asked if he knew anyone that served in the Civil War, and he was able to recall two individuals who had served.
Always the gentlemen, Paul dressed immaculately in suit and tie every day for his visit to the DA Davidson office where he was part of their office family. Paul was a man of class, dignity, and humble charm. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Grace, and his wife Marie. He is survived by his step-daughter Kathleen Davenport of Tuscan, AZ. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity in his name. No services are scheduled.
