Helen Alice Bates went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the age of 88.

Helen was born on Feb. 4, 1926, to Mike and Frances Wieand in Glen Ullin, N. D. She completed the eighth grade and later worked in a Glen Ullin drugstore, where she met the love of her life, Harold “Shorty” Bates. She married Harold on April 17, 1948, and they relocated to Billings.

In the early years of marriage, she enjoyed playing bridge and attending Traffic Club. After she was born again in Jesus, she served wholeheartedly in Women’s Aglow and was active in her local church. Helen’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Shorty Bates; and is survived by three children: Bruce (Debbie) Bates, Karen (John) Martin and Brett (Liane) Bates; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren (Jonathan, Jillian, Cory, Trina, Ben, Quinn, Ashlynn, Jessica, Tiffani, Derek, Ian, Trevor, Callee, Fallon, Decklyn, Easton and Ryker).

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave.. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at Chapel of Hope, with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

  1. Bruce, Karen & Brett, I was so sorry to hear of my sweet aunt Helen’s death. How happy she must be to be with your father and her parents and brothers and sisters. I know she will be dearly missed by all of you, as well as her grand children. I loved my aunt and I shall hold her forever in my heart. I love you all.
