A beautiful soul went to Heaven on Tuesday evening, Feb. 23, 2021. Mom has been reunited with her soulmate and other loved ones who passed before her. Deo Toft Degn was born on Sept. 7, 1933, to Christina and Knut Toft in Sidney. After she graduated from high school, she met and married our father, Arne Degn, in 1952. She had three children: Mike, Rhonda and Karen. They lived on the Degn and Sons farm until 1963, when Arne decided to move to Bozeman to complete his master’s and PhD at MSU. After completion, they moved to Blacksburg, Virginia, for three years and then back to Montana to reside in Billings permanently.

You have never met a more kind, humble and giving person as our mother. And let’s talk about creative talents Mom had. She made our clothes and most of my dad’s suits with perfect. From flower arranging, card making, quilts, baking and more, she was amazing. Mom made the banners that hung at Messiah Lutheran Church and sewed Christmas pageant costumes for the children. We can’t forget her musical talents, which she passed on to her three children. And, with Alzheimer’s taking over her memory, music was one thing that brought her back to us.

Her four grandchildren meant the world to her, as well as her three great-grandchildren, soon to be four with Fiona arriving in April. You always brightened her day!

Deo is survived by her three children, Mike Degn (Jill), Rhonda Roberts and Karen Krum (David); grandchildren Justin Roberts (Tracy), Sarah Rachor (Matt), Matt Degn (Katie) and Steven Krum (Anni); great-grandchildren Megan Rachor, Reese and Jett Roberts, and soon-to-be Fiona Krum; stepbrothers Marvin, Donald, Phillip and David Dynneson; and many nephews and nieces; close to Mom’s heart, Dione Roberts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arne Degn; brother Dick Toft; sister Ethel Bond; stepbrother Dale Dynneson; son-in-law Randy Roberts; and nephews Russell Toft and Robert Bond.

Mom, your three children were honored that we could keep you in our home during the onset of your Alzheimer’s disease. We love you and miss you.

  1. Arne and Deo were both wonderful, kind and compassionate people, we go way back when Arne and I served on a church board together, he from Messiah and me from Peace. We got to be friends so I was pleased to get to know Deo as well. May you be comforted by all the wonderful memories you have. God Bless the memory of Arne an Deo, they were among the best. God’s Peace

Wow. Life is so short. It seems like yesterday Deo and Arne were married and began their new life together. What a beautiful start to a new life together which now seems so brief. Philip L Dynneson

  3. I am saddened to hear that Aunt Deo has passed away. She was a beautiful woman, wonderful wife and mother. I am glad she was able to live a full life and that her children could be with her to the end. My thoughts are now with Mike, Rhonda and Karen.

  4. Deo and Arne were both cousins….Deo also a step sister….only sister I ever had. She got me thru the first grade. She loved her kids…she was LOVE. As Philip said, a short life….we’ll lived. Blessings on her beloved family. We will never forget her.

  5. My heart is touched when I see that later picture of Aunt Deo. I see my dad in that picture so clearly. You can really tell they were brother and sister. It makes me wish I had known her better. But that party in heaven is growing. And someday we will all be together again. My thoughts and prayers are with my cousins, Mike, Rhonda and Karen.

  6. Mike, Jill and family,
We are so sorry for your loss. We know how hard it is and yet a blessing that she is free. God’s blessings on all of your family.

My memories of Deo is like what was in the obituary–a pleasant, giving, talented individual who was always a “lady”. My condolences on her passing.
