Alvin “Al” Charles Farmer passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, in Billings, Montana, just shy of his 92nd birthday. He was born on November 16, 1932, in Great Falls, Montana to Alma Faye Powell (Farmer-Grant) and Frederick W. Farmer.
Al’s life is best summed up in his own words:
“I had a great life filled with love, travel and adventure. I was blessed with a wonderful wife, Marjorie, and two great children, Scott and Stacy. I could not ask for anything more.”
Al treasured childhood memories of fishing and camping with his older brother, Bill, as well as time spent with extended family on the farm and ranch near Geraldine and the Highwood Mountains. As a teenager, Al worked part-time as a journeyman printshop apprentice. After graduating from Great Falls High in 1952, Al joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. Following his service, he used his GI Bill to earn two master’s degrees in Geology and Education: one from the University of Montana and the other from the University of Indiana.
Al was a beloved teacher at Lewis & Clark Junior (now “Middle”) School in Billings, where he enthusiastically taught earth science for over 30 years. During his long teaching tenure, he was awarded several National Science Foundation scholarships and honored by the Montana Education Association as Science Teacher of the Year. In 1985, he was the recipient of an International Teaching Fellowship to Australia. Also, for many years, Al taught community Adult Education classes in rock and gem cutting and astronomy. Later, in retirement, he would continue to share his love of the heavens, holding star-gazing parties under the Arizona and Montana night skies.
In addition to his dedication to education, Al was a skilled private pilot. Flying was not just a hobby but a true passion. He spent many weekends soaring through the Montana skies, sharing his love for aviation with his family and friends and enjoying memorable expeditions to Canada, Alaska, and above the Article Circle. Al was a proud member of the local aviation community and contributed to various flying clubs and events. Eventually, Al passed on his love of flying to his son, who is a professional airline captain, and a grandson who just acquired his private pilot’s license this week and hopes to also make flying his career.
Above all, Al was a devoted family man. His love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was boundless; hugs were aplenty, and forgiveness was never withheld. Al’s wisdom, kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering support were the cornerstones of his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marjorie Haugrud Farmer; his son Scott (Bonnie) Farmer and grandsons Scotty and Nathan; and his daughter Stacy (Scott) Tenney and granddaughter Olivia. Additionally, Al was blessed with wonderful friends, many who have preceded him in death. A special “shout out” of love and thanks to those best friends who have survived him, especially Charlie, Connie, Lee, Ruthie, and Fred. Also, a special thanks to the Billings Fire Department/AMR and Comfort Care health care providers at Billings Clinic.
In accordance with Al’s wishes, no public funeral is to be held. His cremated remains are to be buried at the Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel, Montana where his family will pay homage. His farewell to all: “See you in the Stars.”
