Carla Jean Schmidt died on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at St. Vincent Hospital. Carla was born on Nov. 30, 1949, in Salt Lake City, to Carl and Maude Swanson. She was their only child. Her father was in the service, and it was during Carla's early years that she grew to love traveling. In 1968, Carla married Steven Sandahl. Their son, Alan, was born in 1969. With their business, Steve and Carla traveled throughout the world, visiting many places in the Far East and Africa. Steve died suddenly in 1998. Carla worked for Conoco-Phillips until her retirement in 2010. This is where she met her husband, Richard Schmidt. In 2000, Carla and Richard were married. Together, they enjoyed traveling, golfing, cooking and their dogs. Carla loved animals, especially dogs and horses. There wasn't a stray dog around that Carla didn't want to bring into her home. Her favorite T-shirt said: "I love dogs, it's humans that annoy me." Carla is survived by her loving husband, Richard; her children and grandchildren, Alan Sandahl and son Parker; Robin (Tyler) Markuson and their children, Tara, Jennifer (Logan) and Ami; Rick (Rosemary) Schmidt and their children, TJ and Megan; Chris (Kevin) Turman and their children, Faith, Sateva and Grace; Stacy (Kurt) Johnston and their children, Tori, Cole, Abby, Lexy and Emma; and Jamie Schmidt; sister-in-law Betty (Jim) Goodman and brother-in-law Sam Sparr; as well as her beloved dogs, Andy, Comet, Sophie and her newest addition, Molly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Maude Swanson; husband Steve Sandahl; and sister-in-law, Bernice Sparr. Donations may be made to the American Liver Foundation. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary.
