Charles Vandegenachte, 85, lifelong resident of Billings, passed away on June 15, 2007. Charles had struggled for over a year with complications from leukemia and congestive heart failure. He is at peace now.
Charles was part of the pioneer effort that expanded into the Billings Heights. Born in 1921 with his identical brother, Frank, Charles joined father (Charles, Sr), mother, (Marie), and older brother (Fred) on the family vegetable farm on Lincoln Lane. Charles with Frank worked hard on the farm and spent most of their free time roaming the area now occupied by homes.
Charles entered the Army in 1942 and served in Texas and New Jersey. Charles was discharged from active duty in 1946 and remained in the reserves until 1964. While on leave, Charles married Erma L. Sian, who was the love of his life. During their 62 years together they shared many joys and much happiness. Charles was especially proud of his son, Robert and his three grandchildren, Jeff, Willow and Erin.
In 1946 Charles began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. After 30 years, he retired as the Personnel Officer. Then Charles worked as the Training Officer for the City of Billings Public Utilities for 5 years. In retirement Charles enjoyed working in his yard, especially nurturing his tomatoes. He enjoyed traveling to visit friends and relatives. In all activities Charles dwelled on the good and the positive with a smile on his face. Charles believed strongly in his faith and was a devoted member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers.
Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Erma of Billings, son, Robert (Sue) of Billings, Grandchildren Jeff, Willow (Rock), Erin (Shane) and great grandchildren Elizabeth, Kayci, Kaleb and Matthew; numerous sister in laws, brother in law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
