Darlene R. (Haarberg) Gissler, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Jan. 1, 2012.
Darlene was a beloved wife, mother, nana, sister, aunt and friend to many. She shared her quick wit, infectious smile and twinkling blue eyes with all whom she encountered.
Darlene was born on Aug. 17, 1923, in Sharon Springs, Kan., to John and Anna Haarberg. She was the second oldest of four children: her sister, Irene Kunneman (deceased) and brothers Dean Haarberg of Imperial, Neb., and Elton Haarberg of Colorado Springs, Colo. She graduated from Chase County High School, Imperial, in 1940, and was a bookkeeper for AAA, Imperial. She also was a cashier, receptionist and discount clerk who traveled a five-state area, training personnel for the new offices. Darlene also worked for U.C.I.T.-FIN., and the Department of the Blind, opening after World War II, in Lincoln, Neb. After her children were grown, she worked in finances and taxes in Billings.
Darlene married Leonard E. Gissler on Sept. 7, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church, Imperial. They raised three children: Greg (wife Deborah) Gissler of Austin, Texas; Janis Miller (husband Bill) of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Julie Gissler of Phoenix. Darlene was Nana to Haley and Madeline Miller of Ft. Collins, and Anna Barry of Phoenix, who all loved her very much. She also had many nephews and nieces that she enjoyed spending time with.
Darlene volunteered at both First English Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Church, where she and Lee were members. Darlene also enjoyed playing bridge, baking, spending time with her friends and traveling with her husband Lee. They saw the world, and went on cruises, tours, and spent a great deal of time in Spain.
Darlene will be greatly missed by all, and will be in our hearts forever.
Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m., at Mission Ridge Chapel, 3840 Rimrock Road.
