Dorothy Swandal Larango

Dorothy Swandal LaRango died with her family at her side on March 6, 2019, at the age of 96.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1922, in Wilsall, to John and Lola Mae Swandal. She grew up in the Shields Valley on a ranch with her four siblings and a tight-knit extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Growing up on the ranch instilled independence, a strong work ethic, pride in her Norwegian heritage, and prioritizing family and fun.

Dorothy met the love of her life, Joseph LaRango, at the Wilsall Prom in 1942. They married on Feb. 19, 1944, and began their life together until his death in June of 1984. Dorothy was the pillar of support for her husband and her children: Craig (Helen), Guy (Randa), Laurie Paris (Lynn) and Lani Cathey (Pat). She was a loving grandma to Robyn McCabe (Donald), Jason LaRango, Riley Paris (Krissy), Conor and Megan Cathey. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Taylor, Brassar, Makayla and Adalynn. Addie was the joy of her life for the last two and a half years. She is also survived by special step-grandchildren Nathan (Amy), Nicole (Mike), Jazer, Aleah, Chance, Dylan and Molly. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her siblings and a daughter.

Dorothy was an inspiring lady in countless ways and an example of being there for family and friends through thick and thin. She was always ready to welcome you into her immaculate home with homemade cookies in the cupboard. Dorothy kept her elegance and independence throughout her aging years, all while keeping her hair perfectly coiffed. With her lipstick and a mission, she was unstoppable.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1108 N. 24th St. West, Billings. A reception at the church will follow.
