Fred Sherman Bell, Jr

Fred Sherman Bell, Jr, 87 of Billings, Montana, passed away Sunday morning, May 25, 2008 at Valley Nursing Home. Fred was born on August 27, 1920 at Brookview, Maryland.

His late parents were Mary Ann Green and Fred Sherman Bell, Sr. of Mardela Springs, MD. He is survived by his wife Shirley K. Bell and his son Fred Sherman Bell, III, both of Billings, MT; two grandchildren, Garrick (Gary) A. Bell of Bremerton, WA and Wendelyn (Wendy) Bell Piskula of Yorkhaven, PA and one younger sister, Laura Bell Givens of Salisbury, MD. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Lucille Bell Donohoe, also of Salisbury, MD. Nieces surviving him are Peggy Donohoe Trader, Nancy Donohoe Ashley, and Tana Townsend Barnes, all also of Salisbury and a nephew, David A. Donohoe of Princess Anne, MD.

Fred worked on his parents' farm in Mardela and later for his uncle J. B. Green at his furniture store in Princess Anne. Fred and Shirley married on April 23, 1942 and had just passed the 66 year anniversary of their marriage. He then joined Wayne Pump Company in 1965 in Salisbury, building gasoline pumps. In 1976 he joined the Final Assembly Department of Dresser Industries and worked 10 more years. He also had his own business installing floor coverings and storm windows. Fred retired in 1986. Later in 1998 Fred and Shirley came to live with their son and his family in Billings.

Fred led a full life and liked to keep busy. In Billings he cut grass, painted and repaired the house, and walked the family American Eskimo dog, Puffy.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 7 pm, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings, Montana.

I REMEMBER HOW HELPFUL BOTH OF YOU WERE WHEN DONNIE AND I WERE NEWLY WEDS LIVING NEXT TO YOU ON COULBOURNE DRIVE. DONNIE DIED SUDDENLY WITH A HEART ATTACK IN 2003. I REMARRIED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. I am sure that you don’t know me. I remember Mr. Bell as a child when he collected on Deal Island for the furniture store in Princess Anne, and my dad worked at Wayne Pump with Mr. Bell. Dad always had Mr. Bell laughing as they joked around whenever they were in the same company, either on the street or at work. One thing sticks in my mind, Mr. Bell always had a great attitude and a big wonderful smile. He was well liked by my family, there was 6 of us kids and Mom and Dad. Mom, Dad, and one of my brothers have gone to be with the Lord. I feel your pain. Thank God for wonderful memories. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Dear Shirley and family, Allison Adam’s, Ebee’s daughter, called me last night after reading of Fred’s passing in the Salisbury paper. Doc and I and the kids send our heartfelt sympathy. We have so many good memories of you and Fred from our visits with Dad and Ebee. Also when we lived down in Maryland for a while. It was so good to know Dad’s family in my adulthood. It was dearly missed in childhood. I am just sorry we never got a chance to meet with Sherman and his family. We always “just missed him” when he was there with you. I treasure my memories of you both. I was reading some of the remembrances at this web site. So nice, so true. Dear Mrs. Bell and Family: Mr. Bell as I remember him was friends with my parents Gene and Anne Webster of Deal Island. I believe Mr. Bell worked, maybe parttime, with a furniture store in Princess Anne and that brought him to my family home every Saturday morning. My father loved to joke and kid and there was always laughter between he and Dad. I remember his kindness and warm laughter. My parents passed on to heaven Mom first in January l998 and Dad July 1999. I will always remember Mr. Bell as a kind and warm man that always brought laughter to our home.
