Reverend Samuel Foos departed to the "Greater Life" at Morning Star Senior Living July 5, 2017. He left quietly, without trauma, leaving us sad, but rejoicing in a life well lived and that he is reunited with his wife, Dr. Rowena Foos, who preceded him in death April 8, 2016.
Sam was born to Fredrick and Lydia Foos June 17, 1922, in Fort Collins, Colorado. He lived in the Northern Colorado area and went to grade school and high school there. He then attended Moody Bible Institute, where he completed the Pastor's course and later attended Wheaton College, where he graduated in 1948. While at Wheaton, he was tutored in Greek by Jim Elliot, who was later martyred by the Auca Indians in Ecuador. He also sang in a gospel glee club and frequently performed on radio in Chicago and traveled across the country performing. He did postgraduate studies at Wheaton; UNC in Greeley, Colorado; and also at EMC in Billings.
On May 21, 1949, he married Rowena Shorb in South Bend, Indiana, and was married to her almost 67 years until her recent death. After the wedding, they drove across country in a Dodge Coup with a defective transmission from South Bend, Indiana, to Colorado and made it safely!! Sam served as pastor in many different communities: Prospect Valley, Colorado (his first parish that paid a nominal salary plus potatoes, eggs and milk). Rowena taught at the time in a one-room school with 12 different grade levels - quite a challenge. He later served in Lingle and Worland, Wyoming; Wiggins and Greeley, Colorado (where he was pastor at the time that they built a new church - St. John's United Church of Christ); San Bruno, California; and then Hardin, Billings and Worden, Montana. Sam retired from the ministry in 1984.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline and Helen; four brothers, Emmanuel Foss of Rawlins, Wyoming, Fred Foss of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Eugene Foss of Littleton, Colorado, and Solomon Foss of Cheyenne, Wyoming. He is survived by his sister, Hanna Shoeler; two sons, Stephen (Clare) Foos of Reno, Randal Foos of Billings; and three grandchildren, Aileen, Samuel and Stephanie.
A heartfelt thanks from the family for the love and professional care provided to Samuel by the staff and friends at Morning Star Senior Living and Compassus Hospice.
