Irene was born the fourth of five children to William and Laura Fraase in Anslem North Dakota. Growing up, her father managed grain elevators in various areas including Richardton where Irene graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1940.

She met her future husband, Eugene, while teaching at rural grade schools in the Richardton area. They were married on May 26, 1943 in Richardton, settling on the Kuntz Family Farm south of Richardton. Subsequently they moved to town, then to Taylor, and Dickenson before settling in Glendive to raise their eleven children.

Irene was a avid seamstress, a life-long gardener and enjoyed most of all cooking for family gatherings. In Glendive she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, women's Elks group and worked in the Dawson County Clerk & Recorders office.

In 1998 she and Eugene moved to Billings to be closer to their family. After Eugene passed away in 2004, Irene spent time visiting various children, spending the past two winters staying with her son and his family in Bozeman.

Surrounded by family she passed away at her home in Billings following a brief illness.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, her parents, brothers Clarence (Shorty), Albert and Victor as well as two grandsons and one great-granddaughter. She is survived by sisters Violet Horman and Myrtle Quitscriber; brother-in-law Richard Kuntz and children Tim (Lynn), Janice (Ed) Allen, Dennis (Erlene), Judy (Tom) Lohrenz, Clayton (Roxanne), Mary (Orin) Bailey, Kathleen (John McNulty), Valerie (Dennis) Olson, Eugene (Laura), Deborah (Dan) Vincelette, & Sharon as well as twenty seven grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
