Jim Hengelfelt, 61, of Billings. passed away June 12, 2015, at Billings Clinic Hospital, due to complications of necrotizing pancreatitis.
He was born in Leavenworth, Kan., and graduated from Topeka West High School, Topeka, Kan. He earned a bachelor's degree in Engineering from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. Jim Hengelfelt moved to Billings in 1978 to begin a career with ExxonMobil. He retired in 2010 after 32 years of service. Since that time, he has continued to work as a contract employee for the corporation.
Jim's hobbies included boating, riding his bike, walking with the people in the morning, and having coffee with the retirees from ExxonMobil. He spent most of his summers at Cooney Lake, along with many other lakes around Montana. Jim always loved being the captain of his boat, pulling all the kids and adults around the lake on tubes and skies.
Jim is survived by a son, Justin Hengelfelt, his wife, Autum, and their daughter, Elli, all of Billings. He is also survived by a sister, Janice Day and her husband, Bob, of Overland Park, Kan. Extended Billings family include Jean and Paul Williams, Kathy and Jim Garretson and Eric and Robin Stauffer, Danelle and Madison. Tyona, Matt, Katie, Abby, Thomas and Samantha Albrecht of Spokane, Wash., Lynn, Mike, and Adam Jordan of Overland Park, Kan., and Scott and Julianna McCoy of Naples, Fla., also survive. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Helen Hengelfelt, and his former wife, Barb Williams Hengelfelt.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 22, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave. A reception will follow the service at the Elks Club, 934 Lewis Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's name to Kansas State University School of Engineering, 2323 Anderson Ave., Suite 500, Manhattan, KS 66502-2911; or Radio Bible Class Ministries, 3000 Kraft Ave. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49512.
