John Henry Michel, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed into heaven on Dec. 23, 2018, two days before his 97th birthday, at Billings Clinic Hospital, after surgery for a broken hip.
John was born on Dec. 25, 1921, in Billings, to Cornelius and Theresa Lehman Michel. His twin brother died at birth. He had 11 brothers and sisters, and his family farmed the area where Trinity Lutheran School is now on, among other areas. He grew up in Billings as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and married Donna Benes on Sept. 23, 1951.
John was baptized on Feb. 12, 1922, and confirmed on June 5, 1938. He was an active member of Trinity, and helped out with maintenance at the church and school for many years. John served as head usher, elder, assistant treasurer, and on evangelism and stewardship committees.
John worked at Montana-Dakota Utilities for 33 years, attaining the positon of service supervisor. He was able to fix almost anything until macular degeneration affected his vision. He enjoyed accordion music, dancing, gardening,and playing cards. He was also an avid sports fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and four brothers. John is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Roger (Karole) and Gerald (Bridget); his three grandchildren, Eric (Georgia), Alexander (Leah), Bethanie Ballenski (Timothy); seven great-grandchildren, John, HonĂ³ria, Wesley, Miles, Turner, Desmond, and another baby boy, due this week; and sister, Mary Essman. His greatest joy was visiting with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John was a strong Christian, was very supportive of his family, and was always ready to lend a hand. We rejoice that he is healed, his sight is restored, and he is with his Lord.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 537 Grand Ave. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran School or the charity of one's choice.
