John Gerard Terry, 59, of Billings, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 20, 2011.
John was born on Sept. 11, 1952, in Wichita, Kan., to Vincent R. and Bertha E. Terry. He was the youngest of four siblings. John's childhood was spent in Wichita, where he attended All Saints Grade School and received his high school diploma through the University of Nebraska. John received his BS degree in biology and psychology from Wichita State University in 1976. He attended St. George's University School of Medicine on the island of Grenada from 1979 to 1981. In 1981, John transferred to the University of Kansas School of Medicine to complete his medical degree in 1983. After medical school, John completed his internship and residency in radiation oncology at the Indiana University Medical Center in 1987. From 1987 to 1988, John was in a solo radiation oncology practice in Salina, Kan. He practiced radiation oncology from 1988 through 1992 in Waterloo, Iowa, where he also was the director of the Cedar Valley Hospice. John earned his board certification in 1990 from the American Board of Radiology. In 1992, John moved to Billings and practiced at Northern Rockies Radiation Oncology Center until 2010, when he helped establish Frontier Cancer Center - the last place he treated his patients.
John married the love of his life, Ruth Ann Frederking, on June 25, 1977, in Salina. John and Ruth were blessed with a son, David Vincent Terry, in 1986. In addition to John's family, he loved working on cars, hunting, fishing, cycling, driving his tractor and the "dremel" group at Big R. He was a humble man who cared more about his patients, family and friends than himself, and was more than willing to talk politics, UFOs, physics and the latest technology with anyone who wanted to spend the time. John's dry wit will be missed by everyone.
John is survived by his wife, Ruth; son and future daughter-in-law, David and Katya Mickelson; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Kenneth Adamek; brother-in-law, Ron Konkel; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Walter and Marian Frederking; sister-in-law, Becky Voelzke; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Esther and Joseph Roth; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Kim Frederking; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Konkel; and sister, Connie Terry.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Michelotti-Sawyers, from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept. 26, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park, with a light lunch/reception to follow at the fellowship hall at Mount Olive.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Meadowlark House or PEAKS, c/o of St. Vincent Foundation, 1106 N. 30th, Billings, MT 59101; or the charity of your choice.
John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him - he was called home much too soon.
