Karen Lee Swiftney, 71, of Greybull, Wyoming, was called home by her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, surrounded by her family, after a three-year courageous battle with cancer.

Karen was brought into this world on July 6, 1952 (on her grandparent’s 42nd wedding anniversary) to Lester and Barbara (Nedervelt) Werly. Karen graduated in 1970 from Spring Lake High School in Michigan. She met the love of her life, Dennis Swiftney, in June 1970 and got married May 22, 1971. They had 52 wonderful years. They had two sons, Corey and Grady, a few short years later. They moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1977, where Karen was a produce clerk for Albertsons for 30 years. Karen and Dennis eventually moved to Greybull to be closer to their grandchildren and built their forever log cabin home.

Karen loved helping anyone who needed help. She loved knitting, crocheting, and, together, Dennis and Karen loved watching the wildlife in their back yard. More than anything, they loved spending time with family, especially grandkids and great-grandkids. Karen was very strong in her faith and loved her family at Grace Southern Baptist in Greybull. Karen and Dennis also spent a lot of their time at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains.

Karen is survived by her husband, Dennis Swiftney; sister Patricia Werly of Muskegon, Michigan; son Corey (Kate) Swiftney of Keaau, Hawaii; son Grady Swiftney of Greybull; grandchildren Peyton (Quinton) Haley of Greybull, Avery (Lexi) Swiftney of Greybull, Breckin Swiftney, Kenzie Swiftney, Declan Swiftney, Tilahun Swiftney, all of Keaau; great grandchildren Huntleigh and Creed Haley of Greybull; niece Stephanie (Mike) Rosset Keller of St. Johns, Michigan; along with so many other family and friends.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Barbara (Nedervelt) Werly; sister Susan Werly Rosset; and grandson Gerritt Swiftney.

A celebration of life was held on Sunday, Feb. 11, at Grace Southern Baptist and ashes are to be spread with her grandson Gerritt’s ashes.
