“Sacred Hawk,” as named in the Crow tradition by Mary Hogan-Wallace, was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on the morning of Oct. 23, 1995. He made his journey to the other side of camp on the morning of Sept. 2, 2024.
LaCroix was the youngest of three children born to Lorena Delrae Plainfeather and Grant Scalpcane, Sr. He was given the name Colton NyJoel Scalpcane in honor of his parents’ nephews. Adopted and raised by Mardell and the late Dan “Porky” Plainfeather of Billings, he received the name LaCroix Dion Plainfeather. He was also adopted by Tim and the late Stephanie Parker of Box Elder.
LaCroix attended Box Elder Elementary School, Miles Avenue Elementary School, and Lewis & Clark Middle School, graduating from Skyview High School in 2014. He went on to earn a Welding Technology Diploma from Lincoln College of Technology in Denver, Colorado, becoming a certified welder.
During his school years, LaCroix was an active athlete. In middle school, he played football for the Billings City League as a left tackle and left guard and continued to play defensive end for the Skyview Falcons in high school. He also participated in the Billings City Lacrosse League, playing left wing and goalie for the Scorpions and East Heights teams, with his number being 66. LaCroix enjoyed being involved in these sports and spent his summers in Rocky Boy, helping with his adopted family’s horses and cultural practices. His adopted uncle, Dominic Bradley, educated LaCroix in Cree ceremonial ways. LaCroix enjoyed learning and participating in these events. He was skilled with horses and assisting with ceremonies, being a proud member of the Night Hawk Dance Society and part of the Big Lodge Clan and Ties the Bundle Clan of the Crow Tribe.
LaCroix served as the acting Chaplain of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) #176 in Billings, where he was a member since 2022. He enjoyed participating in pool tournaments, socializing, and volunteering for charitable and community events. His last place of employment was MAC LTT; he was employed as a welder.
LaCroix was known for his protective nature and his playful teasing of family members. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
