The family of LaVerne J. Jensen gathered on the morning of March 8, 2018, at Billings Clinic Hospital to usher a heartbreaking send off to a dedicated mother - in every way, a kind, loving and selfless woman.
A classy lady by anyone's standards, LaVerne was born June 23, 1933, to Roy and Alma Cameron in Westhope, ND. The eldest of three Cameron Girls, LaVerne was a basketball athlete long before it was a norm in women's athletics. After graduation from Antler High School, LaVerne attended Minot State College, where she pursued studies toward her teaching degree.
Following a courtship fanned by the weekly town dances in Antler, ND, LaVerne wed Otto Jensen on June 27, 1954. Boom or bust, the marriage of Otto and LaVerne brought them through many towns in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota, finally settling in Billings on Good Friday, 1967.
Their marriage brought the arrival of four sons and a steadfast dedication by LaVerne to her boys and all their goings on. From basketball games, including a couple of West High Golden Bear State Championship, to gymnastics, Boy Scout activities and all that four boisterous boys could throw at her, LaVerne was a dedicated mother, wife and homemaker. She made certain that each of her Jensen Boys was well-versed on ironing, cooking, sewing, and was adept in the skills necessary to assist with keeping their home ship-shape come cleaning day.
With four sons came many friends and teammates over the years. On any given night or holiday weekend, no one was ever turned away, and several boys from Billings and afar found themselves welcomed into the Jensen House. LaVerne warmly welcomed each and hosted numerous "adopted" sons over the years.
LaVerne is predeceased by her parents and her niece, Rhonda Leben. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Otto; their four sons, Ron, Bruce (Lynette), Brad (Carole) and Gary (Lisa); sisters Marilyn and Merle (Alon); as well a niece and many nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donation in LaVerne's memory to The Special K Ranch (PO Box 479, Columbus, MT 59019). The agricultural efforts of the ranchers there have long provided flowers to adorn the summer patio of the Jensen Home.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4125 Grand Ave. Interment will be held at a later date.
