A life well-lived, cherished, admired, and loved

Logan James Shedd was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Nov. 4, 2023. Jim, as he was known, was born on March 8, 1925, to Clarence Shedd and Mabel Shedd Cadwallder in Deadwood, South Dakota. Along with his two siblings, he spent his childhood in Deadwood and was raised by his grandparents and aunt. Jim would often tell stories of Deadwood Pioneers, such as Potato Creek Johnny, whom he knew personally, and how Deadwood had changed from the time he cared for the horse that pulled the milk wagon to having modern gaming machines in its establishments. Deadwood was always deeply loved by Jim for all of his 98 years.

Jim loved sports. He played football and basketball in high school. With his son, Jim attended a Cardinal World Series in St. Louis. He refereed many high school football and basketball games into his early 70s, helped chaperone teenagers at his grandson’s state basketball tournament, bowled a 300 at 90, and was still golfing with his grandchildren at 95.

Jim attended South Dakota Boys State in 1942. When drafted the day after his 18th birthday, the Superintendent of Schools begged the local draft board to let Jim graduate high school. Jim did graduate from Deadwood High School on May 24, 1943. The next day he was on a bus to California for basic training. Jim spent World War II in Army 563 Quartermaster Railroad Company in New Caledonia, the Philippines, and Japan as a Chief Clerk in charge of rations.

After the war, Jim attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota. In Spearfish, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Shedd. They were married on Nov. 12, 1949. This marriage lasted for 73 years until Marilyn’s death on Sept. 25, 2023. They were known for their love of dancing and socializing with friends and family. Jim reenlisted in the Army Reserves in 1949 and spent the next two years in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1951, Jim and Marilyn moved back to Deadwood. In 1952, they purchased Stearns and Shedd Hardware, along with Myron and Janet Stearns. Jim also worked for the City of Deadwood in the early ’70s, being in charge of the city’s Public Works. In 1975, Jim and Marilyn purchased a jewelry store in Deadwood. Shedd Jewelers operated in Deadwood until 2019.  Jim sold and repaired jewelry, fixed watches, and loved telling jokes to all the customers and friends who patronized Shedd Jewelers.

Jim was so thankful for the community of Deadwood. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, founding member of Deadwood VFW, a beloved Little League Baseball coach of the “Yellowjackets,” founding member of Tomahawk Country Club, a member and President of Deadwood Public Schools School Board for many years, a member of the Masonic Golden Lodge #7 for 72 years, a member of Deadwood Chamber of Commerce and Elks Club, and sat on the City of Deadwood Planning and Zoning Commission from 2009 to 2019.

Jim loved his family. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 2019, Jim and Marilyn moved to Billings to be close to family. They were a part of the St. John’s United At-Home program and Vista Assisted Living. These St. John’s programs lovingly cared for Jim and Marilyn. Also, over the last few years, Jim and Marilyn were devotedly cared for by Martina Manyguns.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; his son, Greg Shedd; his siblings and their spouses, Barbara and Malcom Allen and Tom and Shirley Shedd; his half-brother, Glen Cadwallder, his half-sister, Sue Cadwallder; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Norma and Joe Boushey, Donald and Donna Stearns, Roger Stearns, and Myron and Janet Stearns; and his parents Clarence Shedd and Mabel Shedd Cadwallder.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Sandra Mammenga (Terry); grandchildren Jennifer Kondracki (Brian), Jeri Kelley (Chris), Jodi Waggoner (Steve), John Mammenga and Mark Mammenga (Jamie); his great-grandchildren Alexa and James Kondracki, Andrew and Bridget Kelley, and Ellie and Eli Mammenga; his sister-in-law Ruth Stearns; and wonderful nieces and nephews and their spouses.

A visitation viewing for family and friends will be from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave., in Billings.

A joint celebration of life service for Jim and Marilyn Shedd will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Deadwood, with interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish, South Dakota. A lunch reception will be held at noon at the VFW in Deadwood.
