Louise Barnum Hobbs McClelland was born in Albany, New York, July 23,1915. She was the only child of Edward and Gussie Hobbs. Louise died early Saturday morning at Magnolia Place II where she had been living and receiving loving care for the last three years.

Louise attended Albany Academy for Girls and Wellesley College. She married the Reverend John Francis McClelland on June 19,1940, in Albany. Their first home was in Orient, New York, where John was the minister at Orient Congregational Church. Their children, Jeffrey and Laurie, were born in Orient.

In 1944 the McClelland family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, where John and Louise were asked to start a new church – Christ Congregational Church. Their children, Douglas, Julie and Marcy were born in Silver Spring.

In 1959, the McClelland family moved to Billings where John was called to be Senior Minister of First Congregational Church. Louise took part in all aspects of church life including singing in the choir and participating in Mayflower Circle. After retiring from First Church in 1978, John and Louise moved back to Orient where they had vacationed for many years.

Louise was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her children and grandchildren could always find fresh baked sugar cookies, ginger snaps, and brownies in the kitchen. Whether cooking lobster in Orient or pecan pies in Montana, “Weezie” was a masterful cook and caregiver.

She also gave her time freely to the community. She was involved in Pink Ladies at Billings Deaconess Hospital and Headstart at the Friendship House. She regularly volunteered in the schools by reading with students at Riverside Middle School.

Her husband, John Francis McClelland and her parents and grandparents preceded Louise in death. She is survived by her children Jeff McClelland (Cathy), Laurie Howell (Roger), Doug McClelland (Liza), Julie McClelland, Marcy Brown (Kenny) and grandchildren Heidi Schmalz (Tim), Lisa Shapiro (Dan), John McClelland (Zellie), Carrie McClelland, Kristin McClelland, Michael McClelland, Anya Douglas, and Autumn, David, and Meredith Brown. Five great-grandchildren Megan Schmalz, Sophia and Dalton Shapiro, and Jack and Claire McClelland also survive her.

Visitation will begin 3pm Tuesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Memorial services for Louise will be held at First Congregational Church, 301 North 27th St., Billings, MT on Wednesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice.
