Magdalena "Maggie" Grammens Creek

Maggie Creek passed away on Sept. 29, 2023, at the age of 97, at the Saint John’s United care facility in Billings. Maggie was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1926, to John and Maria Hauser. At the age of 11, following the death of her mother and infant sister, she moved to Pompeys Pillar, Montana, where she was welcomed into the family of her Uncle John, Aunt Anna Tschida and cousins Johnny and Marion. She attended school in Pompeys Pillar and Huntley Project High School, where she graduated in 1945.

Maggie married Frank Grammens at Pompeys Pillar on Sept. 25, 1946. They farmed in the Custer area, where eventually a partnership with two of Frank’s brothers was formed. Maggie and Frank brought four boys into the world. Maggie was a devoted, tireless mother, taking very good care of her husband Frank and their four boys. She always made time for her many friends in the Custer, Pompeys Piller and Worden communities. Life for Maggie was shaken by Frank’s unexpected death on Dec. 15, 1979, at the age of 54.

On Sept. 5, 1985, she married Paul Creek at Pompeys Pillar. They lived at his farm east of Billings and then eventually in Billings. She enjoyed her family, friends, dancing, bowling and reading, particularly dancing to polka music with Paul. She very much enjoyed her time with Paul Creek’s sons, daughters and their spouses. Paul and Maggie were married just short of 36 years at the time of his passing in 2021.

While living in Custer, she was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Custer, and a past president of the Altar Society.  Later in life, she was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings. She was also a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her four sons, Ronald (Valerie) Grammens from Billings, Gerald (Mary Webber) Grammens from Boulder, Colorado, Randall (Janelle) Grammens from St. Michael, Minnesota, and David (Patricia) Grammens from Suwanee, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Paul, Nicholas, Carolyn, Megan, Frank, Jennifer and Wendy; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. From the Creek family, three stepsons, Jerry (Sharon) Creek in Redmond, Washington, Korbin (Leslie) Creek in Pleasanton, California, and Kermit (Sherrie) Creek in Billings; three stepdaughters, Janet (Bill) Ralph in Butte, Marilyn (Dave) Pattee in Belgrade and Marsha Brown in Billings; many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister Mary Anne, husband Frank Grammens and husband Paul Creek.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary, 1001 Alderson Ave., in Billings.

Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 717 18th St. West in Billings, followed by lunch at the same location. Graveside services will be at the Custer Cemetery starting at 3 p.m.
