Marie E. Barnes, 86, of Bighorn, Mont., passed away Thursday morning, March 19, 2015, at Rosebud County Respite Care, Forsyth, where she was given comfort while she said goodbye to the family. She was born north of Custer at her parents' home near Pineview, the daughter of Jens and Alma Nielson. Marie's early school years were at the country school north of Custer, and finished in Custer High School. In 1947, she married Philip Barnes (who died in 1960), and they began their life on the Barnes Ranch, south of Hysham. She enjoyed a good sense of humor and playing cards with grandchildren. Survivors include daughters Eva Wickens (Michael) of Hilger, Karen Rogers (Kenneth) of Sanders; son Gary Barnes of Bighorn; and sister Ruth Stark of Washington. Marie claimed at least 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren, and many more were known to call her grandma and friend. She is also survived by special friend Cindy Strecker. She loved the outdoors, cows, horses, gardens, friends and family. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Jens and Alma Nielson; brother George Nielson of Custer; sister Bessie (Eva) Royston; her husband, Philip Barnes; and her daughter, Phyllis (Barnes) Lantis. Memorials may be made to Rosebud County Respite Care or charity of choice. Cremation has taken place and private family services are planned.
