On Feb. 2, 2012, Mavis Curry, 76, of Billings, passed away from this life at her home, following a battle with cancer.

Mavis was born on May 22, 1935, in Pipestone County, Minn., in the family home, to William and Mildred (Ness) Griffin. In her early years, she attended school in Minnesota until she moved to Montana to live with her aunt and attend the Acme Beauty School, which her aunt owned. She met Claude J. Curry in Billings. They were married in 1955, and four wonderful children were born to this union.

Mavis became an instructor at Acme Beauty College. After being a cosmetology instructor for several years, she went on to become a State of Montana Inspector for salons and barber shops. She also owned her own beauty supply store. In 1989, Mavis moved to California and became a Personal Caregiver and later a Nanny for a loving family who cherished her very much. In 1995, she returned to Montana to retire and become a loving grandma!

Mavis was an avid gardener all her adult life. Her yard was full of blooming plants from spring to fall, and her greenhouse would be started with seeds in the winter to be ready by spring planting. She especially loved her heirloom tomatoes. She was also a wonderful quilter, and crafted quilts for all of her grandchildren to cherish. Mavis thoroughly enjoyed the company and companionship of her card group. They would get together and play pinochle and laugh and visit for hours.

Those left behind to remember Mavis include her mother, Mildred Whitehead; children, Claudine Wanner (Mike Bolte) of Shepherd, Wade (Mary Jo) Curry of California, Debbie (Winfield) Seitz of Billings and Pat (Cheri) Curry of Billings; grandchildren Brian, Shannon, Derek, Jarrett, Ryan, Levi and Cole; five great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Sylvie, Cylus, Makayla and Haley; brothers Arlen (Ellie) Griffin, Farrel (Donna) Griffin and Mike Griffin; sisters Sharon (Gene) Pickens and Cecilia (Elliott) Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
