Michael "Mike" James Kilzer, a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on April 12, 2025, in Billings, Montana. He was born on April 4, 1949, in Elgin, North Dakota, to Werner and Edith Kilzer. Mike's life was characterized by a deep love for family, a dedication to his varied career in agricultural sales, and an abiding affection for all living creatures.
He graduated from North Dakota State with a Bachelor of Arts and went on to build a diverse and fulfilling career that included working as a firefighter in Idaho, cutting firewood, delivering dynamite, working for a blood bank, and providing essential services in agriculture, including delivering cattle. He retired after 20 years of working in fertilizer sales.
In 1998, Mike married Sherryl Muessig, who became his devoted partner. As a stepfather to Jon and Jamie Muessig, Mike embraced his role with love and dedication. His first grandchild, Mikel, gave him a nickname of "Baba", a nickname that would be affectionately used the rest of his life. His family continued to grow, encompassing thirteen siblings, who include Madonna (Walter) Braun, Richard (Linda) Kilzer, Paul (Karen) Kilzer, Roger (Sue) Kilzer, Veronica (Daniel) Sparling, Lauretta (Terry) Marigny, Lucille "Judith" (Peg Ring) Kilzer, Margaret (Allan) Binstock, Ernest (Fr. James) Kilzer, Raymond (Brenda) Kilzer, Sharon Kilzer, Marian (Kent) Quamme, and Kristine (Stewart) Mehrer. He was proud of his large family, which also included 28 nieces and nephews, 2 children, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was cared for by loving grandson, Brandon Muessig, until the very end.
Mike's personality shone brightly through his love for animals, welcoming newborn calves into his kitchen and caring for every creature, regardless of species. His passion for family adventures took him and Sherryl on eight memorable trips to Hawaii, often with their grandsons in tow, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Although Mike faced numerous health challenges, including multiple back surgeries, replacements of his hip and knee, a Parkinson's diagnosis in 2016, and later dementia, he approached life with resilience and a gentle spirit. His indomitable will to cherish every moment with his loved ones remained unwavering until the end.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Sherryl, and a large family that mourns his loss but celebrates the legacy of love and joy he imparted. He joins his parents, Werner and Edith, along with his sister-in-law Vicki Kilzer, niece Lindsy Binstock, nephew Colby Kilzer, niece-in-law Jennifer Kilzer, great niece Elise Rochman and grandson Colby Moler, in eternal rest.
A vigil will be held at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings on April 24, 2025, from 6:00 PM. A Mass will follow on April 25, 2025, at St. Bernard's Parish, at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Laurel City Cemetery following Mass. A reception will follow.
