Peggy M. Darkenwald was born in Billings on March 9, 1928, daughter of John and Katherine McIntosh. She was raised in Billings by her grandparents, John and Marguerite Berryman. John and his brother were Billings' first plumber/boilermakers.

Peggy attended MSU Bozeman until she married her husband, Austin, in 1948. They were happily married 68 years. They have three sons: Mark, Doug and Scott.

Peggy had a strong and abiding faith, and was both a student of the Bible and gentle example of Christian purpose. She was an active community and church leader, always advocating for and encouraging women, young and old, to lead and participate in society in the communities they lived their lives in.

Peggy was active on Rocky Mountain College Board, at Mission Ridge, active in PEO and a "pink lady" when her kids were growing up.

She was the matriarch of our large and extended family. She had high expectations for all generations in the family and encouraged all to lead a contributing life.

And of course she had an "outfit" for every occasion right up through her last days with us. But her favorite occasions always involved family and friends. She was a true friend to so many and will be missed. A life well lived.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4125 Grand Ave.
