Robert Maggard was born on May 8, 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska to Arthur P. and Dorothy Johnson Maggard. He attended Tech High School in Omaha, graduating on November 27th, 1941. He enlisted in the Navy the next day, November 28th, shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He underwent boot camp at the Great Lakes Training Center and then was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After a short stint there he was assigned to escort and anti-submarine duty on the east coast of the United States. He then was part of the campaign along the Aleutian chain in Alaska. After s short stint stateside at Bremerton, Washington he spent some time in the South Pacific. He was sent back stateside where he became part of a communications outfit and he eventually landed with the Marines on Okinawa on April 1, 1945 shortly before the end of WWII.

Robert went to work for Western Electric after his discharge from the Navy, and after a short time decided to follow his father’s wishes and enrolled at Creighton in Omaha. While in Omaha he met Mary Sortino in April of 1949 and they were married six months later in October. He went to dental school at Creighton while working part time at the Post Office as a mail clerk. A co-worker and fellow dental student suggested that he look at Montana as a great place to live and work so he began his dental career in Havre.

After living in various places Bob and his family finally moved to Billings in 1964 and have lived here for 42 years. During the last 4 years, Bob gave back to his community as a volunteer dentist for the Indian Health Service. He became an advocate for those who get very little dental care but who have a great need. He loved the country that he served so faithfully. He lived his life with no regrets, making mistakes along the way and learning from them, content that he did the best he could at the time.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary, and by two children Robert A. Maggard

and Deborah (Don) Grimm; their children Katelyn and Tyler Grimm, Justene Maggard and Jennika Brown. He also has a sister-in-law, Fannie Sorensen of Omaha.
