Roy Oliver passed away on Oct. 26, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s for several years.
Roy Herman Oliver was born on Feb. 15, 1940, in Ekalaka, to Jerome and Gertrude Oliver. He joined two older sisters, Marie and Adrean, and an older brother, Jerry. The family moved to Miles City and Roy spent his childhood there attending school and making lifetime friendships. He loved to talk about growing up in Miles City and kept in touch with his classmates and friends over the years. Shortly after graduating from Custer Co. High, he served in the Navy and was a true patriot all his life. He continued his education at University of Montana and in Billings, graduating from Eastern Montana College.
Roy married Jacquelyn Mocabee in June 1967. They were blessed with a daughter, Dawn, and a son, Mike. He worked for BIA, IRS and BLM. His jobs took the family to live in Helena; Littleton, Colorado; Lewistown; and Billings. Jacque passed away in 1993. Roy retired from the Bureau of Land Management in 1995. In January 1998, Roy married Nancy Hirning and gained a stepdaughter, Jennifer.
Roy loved his family and friends, and enjoyed spending time with all of them. He loved going to garage sales, building projects, researching family history, collecting pigs, reading, talk radio, watching Griz football games, traveling and Montana history. He loved music, especially the big band sound of the ’40s and the music and dancing of the ’50s. He had a wonderful voice and he sang with a barbershop quartet for several years. He enjoyed watching the grandchildren in all of their sporting events and games, and especially enjoyed band and chorus concerts. In his younger years, he liked to go on camping trips with the family and hunting trips with Mike. He was always there for family and friends when they needed help with anything.
Roy is survived by his sister, Adrean of Helena and brother, Jerry of Orange, California; daughter Dawn Schwindt and family of Billings (children: Amber, Macy, Anthony, Kamielyn, and granddaughter Avanlee); son, Mike Oliver and family of Billings (wife Colleen, children: Quinten, Andrew and Mathew); stepdaughter, Jennifer Simons and family of Joliet (husband Bob, children: Mallory, Riley and Taelyn).
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; sister Marie; first wife, Jacque; grandson Cody; and son-in-law, Tony.
