Our wonderful mom, grandmother, and best friend Ruby Mann, 91 of Billings, unexpectedly passed away on May 21, 2010. She was born in Miles City, MT of September 27, 1918, the oldest of four children, born to Ed and Mildred Damm. She lived on her dad's ranch on Pumpkin Creek until she met and married Harold Mann. They resided on Harold's ranch in the Powderville area until moving to Billings in 1950.

She is survived by five daughters Carol Steiger (David) of Billings, Verna Dupuis (Mike) of Bozeman; Sandy Breitenstein-Avery (Dan) of Billings, Sue Jackson of Colorado Springs, CO, and Donna Churchill (Dave) of Billings; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; as well at her sister Ruth Iholts of Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruby was a very active, compassionate, loving person who cared for her family and friends. She babysat Carmen Mullen who became part of the family. Because of her kind and caring spirit she began to work as a nurses aid at Deaconess Hospital in Billings. After years as an aid, she pursued her studies to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She retired from nursing in August 1983. Following retirement, she continued to serve at Deaconess Hospital, volunteering as a Pink Lady. She had many past and present hobbies which included bowling, raising her animals on the ranch, her passion for quilting, her flowers and garden. Ruby was an extensive traveler, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, including Germany and Hawaii. She had loved her motor home and enjoyed camping and being outdoors with her children and grandchildren.

Her greatest sorrow in her life is when she lost her grandson, Corey Jackson in August of 2000. She is also preceded in death by her husband Harold; two brothers Bob and Bill Damm.

Memorials may be sent to the V.F.W of Billings, Post # 1634, 139 Moore Ln., Billings MT 59101 or the charity of one's choice.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 12-8 p.m., Monday 8 a.m.-8p.m. and prior to the service. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Please join the family for a Celebration of Ruby's Life, which will be held at the North Park Community Center, corner of 8th Ave N. and N. 19th St., following the burial.

It has been a difficult year, having lost Dad and now Aunt Ruby. I am so glad that I was able to see her in January at Dad's funeral. Those Damm kids were tough and I think your mom was the toughest. For all that Bob, Dad, and Ruby went through with their health issues it is amazing they lived the quality of life years they did. It seemed like when I talked to dad he would say "Ruby fell and broke...." And the next time I would talk to him he would say Ruby went to Jackpot or was on the road to somewhere else enjoying life. She was an amazing lady who lived everyone of her 91 plus years to the fullest. I do believe that she and dad and Bob are together again with their mom and dad.

I am sorry that I can not make the trip back for her funeral, but I have been and will be thinking of you on Tuesday as you celebrate her life. God Bless all of you and your families.

Ruby, my “other Mom”, as I write this on this Sunday, clear back 55 years ago, I always remember your fried chicken and lemon meringue pie after Sunday School. There never has been any like it in my mind since, just like there will never be another you in my life and heart. However, I have been told that Sandy’s fried chicken could be in close running with yours. You were my babysitter, yes, but more so I was your #6 daughter. I got picked to be a Mann girl! I always felt special because you picked me! When I was little, you were my babysitter, but for all my life you have been the sitter of my heart. I know it will be said she had a good long life of 91 years to love and care for all of us. The problem with that is you did such a wonderful job loving so many of us that we selfishly want the 91 years and in my case, not just the 55 years. Our lunch date is still on. I will come to you and you chose where, as you will know better than I where we will go, but it still will be your turn to pay! As I softly close, you know how much I will miss your ever presence in my life as I knew it 3 days ago, and your love, but the love will always live on, in my heart for as long as I live. I feel your presence as I hug my pillow you made me at night and my quilt hangs near. My Mom now gets to see her best friend and that brings me a feeling of peace. You left this world with a smile on your face, so Ruby like, a smile on her face her entire life no matter what life threw your way.

My parents (Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Damm) and I (Bonnie Powell) would like to offer our sympathy to you all and also to Ruth. Mom wanted to send cards, but didn’t have addresses to send to. I so enjoyed taking the folks to these cousin reunions in Miles City to get to see all the cousins of their generation. What an awesome group they were and still are. We will not be able to make Ruby’s service, but our thoughts and prayers will be with you all as you celebrate her wonderful life…A grand lady indeed..
