Thomas Michael Olsen, son of Mary Fuqua, was released by God from 15 years of pain and suffering as family and friends surrounded him with love. The loved ones left behind are his mother; three children: daughters, Angela VanDecar and Jessica (Jason) Johnson, and son, Chris (Kelli) Johns: 11 grandchildren: Brecken and Greyson VanDecar; Tristin Rodriguez, Aria and Lukas Johnson; Mariah, Tristan, Genesis, Treyden, Kati, and Alina Strecker; aunt and uncle, Delores and Magnum Tulfo (Tom's hero veteran); and many dear cousins and friends.
Tom was so proud of his children, and the Lord Jesus granted Tom's heart's greatest desire by being reunited with them before passing. "God makes all things beautiful in His time."
Tom was a hard worker as a journeyman roofer before his accident in 2002. Another job he really liked was working on a ranch with a Wood-Mizer portable sawmill. He liked working with wood and did beautiful refinishing. As a proud Norwegian, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and commercial fishing on the west coast and into Alaska. He was a Seahawks fan, although eagles were his favorite bird.
In March 1989, while on a 58' fishing boat off the coast of Oregon, winds came up to 100 mph with waves of 12-15 feet when the boat became airborne and came down sideways. The well-experienced captain was able to safely bring them into shore, while another vessel was lost at sea. Also, while living in Alaska as a child, Tom experienced the devastating earthquake of 1964.
When Tom could no longer work, he reached out to help others and for a short time worked with Visiting Angels. His dog, Jenny, was a great joy to him for over 16 years. He was also happy when he could attend Hope Center with his friends.
As Tom's health declined this past year, some thought he couldn't be taken care of at home, but Tom and Mom were determined that he would remain at home. This was only possible with God's help each day and through the hands-on service and persevering prayers of others!
Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all who have cared for Tom: doctors and nurses at the Clinic and both hospitals, home caregivers - many from RiverStone Health, and especially Dr. Megan Littlefield. We will always remember the support of family, friends and neighbors who have stood by us in love and prayer and helped to bring a smile to Tom's face. God bless you. We owe you all a debt of love.
A few years ago Tom had written down this quote: "The old dreams were good. They didn't work out but I'm glad I had them." Tom wouldn't want you to ever give up or live with regrets. He would want you to reach out and give hope to those who are hurting, brokenhearted and in pain. Try to understand that their stories are not what is seen on the outside - try to look on the heart like God does. Forgive others by God's grace, and yes, forgive yourself.
To honor Tom's firm wishes, no service is planned. Family and friends are encouraged to continue sharing memories together.
