On Jan. 14, 2015, the world lost a gentle soul. Wayne Lee Nelson passed away suddenly in his home with his family, after complications from a recent heart surgery.

Wayne was born on Aug. 27, 1939, in Billings, to Neal and Bernie Nelson. He grew up in Billings and graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School in the class he self-proclaimed the "best class ever" of '57. In 1961, he graduated from University of Montana in Business Administration and enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps Reserves. He returned to Billings in 1962 and joined his father's business, Peterson Typewriter Exchange, now Peterson Quality Office. Wayne married the love of his life, Diane Marie Petek, on June 18, 1964. Upon his father's retirement in 1979, Wayne took over the business and worked there the remainder of his life. As a businessman, Wayne was known for his work ethic, honesty and integrity. His lunchtime basketball games at the Y kept him young with occasional black eyes, most memorably before his children's weddings.

Wayne and Diane shared a special love based on mutual respect, faith, trust and friendship. The Lord blessed them with 50 great years together. His family was his greatest treasure. He and Diane raised three children rooted in the Catholic faith. Wayne loved to fly-fish on the Stillwater at his friends' places, and especially near the family cabin in the Beartooth Mountains, a place he loved dearly, where his legacy will live forever. Wayne cherished his family time hunting, fishing, backpacking, golfing, running, skiing, camping and staying at the cabin with his children, gifting them a genuine love of the outdoors. More recently, his favorite moments included attending his grandchildren's activities, his morning coffee group, golfing with Thursday buddies and family summer trips, especially taking his entire family on a Disney Cruise, celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Wayne was endeared to all who knew him ... a true light of our family. Not an unkind word passed his lips. His great character, gentleness, faith, humility, friendly smile and quick wit drew all to him. Everyone loved Wayne. He was an amazing, caring son, husband, dad, grandpa, boss and friend. He was a Christ-like model for us, a true gentlemen we admired and are so proud of. His grandchildren cherished Grandpa. He demonstrated kindness and love and taught each of them life lessons.

Our hearts are broken. You will forever be missed, but always with us. Until we see you again. We love you!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Bernie; his infant sister, Jane; and brother Fred.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Diane; three children, Kevin Nelson (Lorri), Pam Small (Brent) and Julie Hanser (Shel); nine adoring grandchildren, Tyler, Andrew and Evelyn Nelson; Madison, Seeley and Holland Small; Olivia, Melissa and Isaac Hanser.

Wayne's life will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 19, at St. Thomas Church. Recitation of the rosary at 6:40 p.m. will precede the vigil service at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, Jan. 20, at St Thomas Church (10 a.m.). A private family burial will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Memorials may be sent to the Billings Catholic Schools Foundation or St. Vincent de Paul.
